“The chief function of color should be to serve expression.”

— Henri Matisse

The natural world feeds my soul. I attempt to convey through my artwork the spontaneous experience and the personal connection I feel with it. I am often outside painting en plein air where I find inspiration on site about the light, color and composition of the environment. As I engage in this visual process, I take cues from the setting and translate the experience to express how I feel about what I see.

I use the traditional paint materials of oil, acrylic, watercolor and sometimes mixed media to look beyond the obvious and respond to the unique qualities of the scene. The subject is used as a point of departure to realize my own personal expression. My goal is to inspire the viewer to look carefully in order to discover a new vision about a place for themselves. The immediacy of the painted subject is felt as if in real time, as an authentic viewing experience.
